The Netherlands is advancing its renewable energy transition through various geological and feasibility studies. In the North Sea, the Ministry of Economic Affairs has designated search areas for the potential development of approximately 19 gigawatts of new offshore wind capacity. Supporting this, geological studies have been conducted to identify suitable development areas by analyzing ground conditions and geotechnical properties to de-risk turbine foundation engineering. Onshore, investigations in the Diemerscheg region are examining the technical, financial, and environmental feasibility of wind energy generation. These efforts are part of broader regional strategies, such as in the Groningen province, where authorities and businesses are collaborating to achieve a climate-neutral energy system by 2050. This strategy relies heavily on offshore wind as a resource for both energy and economic growth. Recent projections indicate that renewable energy is expected to exceed 80% of the country’s installed electrical capacity by 2035, increasing from the current 65%. This transition is characterized by a strategic shift from rooftop solar toward large-scale offshore wind in the North Sea. This move is intended to mitigate grid congestion and address frequent negative electricity prices occurring during midday solar peaks. Concurrently, thermal generation is expected to decrease significantly as coal is phased out of the national power system.
