In the Netherlands, research indicates that many residents postpone maintenance for central heating boilers. Approximately 12% of people do not plan regular maintenance, while 6% never have their boilers serviced. Furthermore, 15% of respondents wait for a malfunction before seeking service, a rate that increases to 25% among younger demographics. To combat this, the ‘Boiler APK weeks’ initiative was launched to encourage inspections before winter to avoid increased gas consumption and higher repair costs. As winter approaches, safety and efficiency recommendations have expanded to include chimney cleaning and the inspection of electrical installations, such as fuse boxes, particularly due to the rise in connected devices like heat pumps and solar panels. Fire departments recommend ensuring fuse boxes are kept clear of clutter for emergency access and remind residents that smoke detectors must be installed on every floor, a requirement in place since 2022. To manage energy costs, there is an emphasis on improving home insulation. In municipalities like the municipality of Dalfsen, homeowners can access local insulation subsidies that can be combined with national ISDE grants to offset costs. Additionally, heating specialists warn that the start of the heating season often leads to boiler failures, especially in older units. Data from the Toelatingsorganisatie Kwaliteitsborging Bouw (TloKB) indicates that approximately 30% of boilers in the Netherlands may not be regularly maintained, which can pose health risks such as carbon monoxide poisoning. Since April 2023, Dutch law requires that only certified installation companies perform work on central heating boilers.
