Neuroscience research on hippocampal memory mechanisms

Overview

Researchers have identified biological processes within the hippocampus that govern memory formation and cognitive resilience.

Initial findings from Spanish researchers at the Institute of Neurosciences suggest that inhibitory neurons in the dentate gyrus act as dynamic regulators. By adjusting inhibition levels, the brain can prioritize the stability of existing memories or the encoding of new information depending on the volume of information being processed.

Subsequent research focused on cognitive resilience and age-related decline. Studies using mice models revealed that as neurons lose synapses, a specific gene increases the production of an enzyme from the secreted phospholipase family. This natural increase in molecular production is associated with the maintenance of mental functions during aging.
