Overview
Research from ETH Zürich, published in ‘Plos Biology’, has investigated the physiological mechanisms of social bonding to address the global health risk of loneliness. A six-week study involving 61 pairs of participants found that brain synchrony patterns differ based on age dynamics. Intergenerational pairs (ages 18–35 and 70–85) showed higher initial brain synchrony that decreased over time, whereas peer-aged pairs showed increasing synchrony as they learned to anticipate one another’s behavior.
Subsequent discussions have linked these findings to the broader public health crisis of social isolation. Experts suggest that while loneliness is associated with higher mortality and disease risks, treating it solely as a medical issue may overlook social causes like lack of community. The observed neural synchronization during collaborative activities is now being viewed as a potential predictor of an individual’s subjective sense of social bonding and loneliness.
