Increased shark activity along New England coast

In early August, officials reported a surge in large shark activity along New England’s coastline. A 35‑foot basking shark was photographed off Humarock Beach in Scituate, Massachusetts, and drone footage captured several great white sharks feeding near Old Orchard Beach and Pine Point in Maine. Researchers linked the uptick to seasonal prey such as baitfish and seals and urged beachgoers to stay close to shore and report sightings.

The following day, Maine surfers and local businesses described how they were adapting to the heightened risk. Surfers near Pine Point and Higgins Beach began surfing in groups, avoiding murky water and staying alert for seals that can attract sharks. Shop owners reported that customer numbers remained steady and emphasized safety measures, while officials reminded the public that fatal shark attacks in the region are extremely rare.

By August 7, local officials and surf shop owners in Scarborough, Maine, noted that sightings had not deterred customers. Surfers were advised to ride in groups and exercise extra caution during early morning and evening hours.

Recent reports indicate the increased activity extends across the Northeast U.S. coast. In addition to the frequent sightings of great white sharks in Maine—driven by the presence of seals and fish—a rare scalloped hammerhead shark was caught and released by surfcasters in Rhode Island. Researchers suggest that warming waters may be contributing to the increasing presence of hammerheads in the New England region. Maine has been conducting white-shark monitoring efforts since 2020 in partnership with organizations such as the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy.
