New glass frog species discovery in Brazil
Overview
Researchers from the Federal University of Goiás, the University of Brasília, and the Pontifical Catholic University of Goiás have identified a new species of glass frog, Vitreorana micaelae, in Brazil’s Cerrado biome.
Located in the gallery forests near tributaries of the Corumbá River in Luziânia, Goiás, the species is approximately two centimeters long with a translucent body. Scientists utilized morphological analysis, molecular genetics, and bioacoustics to distinguish the frog from related species, noting that its reproductive calls contain fewer notes. The frog inhabits tree canopies on steep slopes and vocalizes specifically during heavy rainfall.
The discovery marks the 11th glass frog species cataloged in Brazil and only the second found exclusively in the Cerrado. Due to potential threats from climate change, deforestation, and hydroelectric damming, researchers suggested the species be classified as ‘Data Deficient’ by the IUCN until further population data is available.
