New snake species named after Slash in New Guinea

Overview

Researchers have formally described a new species of terrestrial snake discovered in New Guinea, naming it ‘Lielaphis slashi’ in honor of Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash. The species is a non-venomous, medium-sized reptile with reddish-brown coloring, typically reaching lengths of 70 to 72 centimeters.

While specimens had been collected as early as 2006, recent genetic and morphological analyses confirmed the snake as a distinct lineage within the Lielaphis genus. Biologists from the Field Museum participated in the study, noting that the naming recognizes Slash’s support for museums and zoos and his interest in herpetology.

Conservation concerns were raised regarding the species’ habitat in low-altitude northeastern New Guinea, which faces threats from coffee cultivation and mining industries.
