New South Wales domestic violence charge increase
Overview
Domestic violence-related charges in New South Wales have reached record highs. Data from the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research indicates that while the actual rate of assaults has remained relatively stable, there has been a sharp increase in the number of people being charged.
Executive director Jackie Fitzgerald noted a “remarkable” spike in charges specifically related to intimidation offences and breaches of apprehended violence orders. The likelihood of a charge being laid following a police-recorded assault rose from 67 per cent to 73 per cent over a two-year period.
This increase is attributed to proactive police action and new technology capable of detecting intimidation via telephone. While Police Minister Yasmin Catley suggested the statistics indicate the state is becoming safer due to these efforts, Fitzgerald cautioned that the long-term effectiveness of this approach is unknown and noted a potential risk of re-victimisation when victims report crimes.
