New South Wales road and railway safety initiatives
Overview
New South Wales is undertaking various initiatives to improve road and railway safety. Transport for NSW has launched the NSW Level Crossing Improvement Program, supported by the Australian Government’s Regional Level Crossing Upgrade Fund, to install boom gates, flashing lights, and audible warnings at 23 locations. To address unsafe driver behavior, NSW Police initiated a two-week patrol campaign in the Upper Hunter region following data indicating significant collisions and fatalities involving trains, vehicles, and pedestrians since 2016.
A regional road trauma inquiry has proposed 13 measures to reduce fatalities and injuries, identifying speeding as the primary cause of road trauma, with 42 per cent of fatalities involving speeding. A report released on September 17 recommends expanding the use of average speed cameras to light vehicles, pending the evaluation of current trials. Other recommendations include infrastructure upgrades such as widening road shoulders, upgrading level crossings, and adding overtaking lanes. The inquiry also noted that funding shortages prevent local councils from maintaining road networks effectively.
To address major infrastructure needs, the Australian and New South Wales governments have committed $1.74 billion through the Regional Corridors Upgrade Program (RCUP). This investment targets three major routes: the Muswellbrook to Armidale corridor ($849.8 million), the Newcastle to Dubbo corridor ($520.8 million), and the Euston to Tocumwal corridor ($375 million). Supported by the NSW Government’s Project Swift initiative to accelerate delivery, these upgrades aim to enhance safety, efficiency, and freight connectivity, including the transport of renewable energy equipment. Expected improvements include new overtaking lanes, digital signage, traffic monitoring cameras, and improved facilities for heavy vehicles.
