New York environmental and park conservation funding

Overview

New York State has seen significant financial contributions and funding allocations directed toward environmental preservation and public land management.

A report from the State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation indicated that community-based non-profit ‘Friends Groups’ contributed an estimated $31 million in value to the state park system during 2025. These 70 partner organizations generated nearly $27 million in revenue through private donations and program fees to support infrastructure, construction, and education.

Following this, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation awarded $2.7 million in funding to 45 not-for-profit land trusts through the Conservation Partnership Program. This initiative supports 56 projects intended to conserve open space, protect water quality, improve public access to outdoor recreation, and enhance climate resiliency.
