New Zealand agricultural economic and pest challenges
Overview
New Zealand’s agricultural sector is experiencing a period of high profitability and export growth, despite ongoing pest management challenges. While a National Pests Survey in August 2026 identified a crisis costing farmers approximately $466 million annually, economic indicators remain strong.
By late September 2026, dairy cooperative Fonterra reported a 97.6% year-on-year increase in operating profit for the 2025/26 fiscal year, reaching 3.4 billion NZD on total revenue of approximately 27 billion NZD. A significant driver of this figure was a one-time 1.2 billion NZD profit from the sale of the Mainland Group consumer business to Lactalis. Excluding this sale, profit from continuing operations rose 23.6% to 1.8 billion NZD, fueled by global demand for milk protein. Fonterra plans to invest 946 million NZD into functional protein segments, foodservice, and plant decarbonization.
Simultaneously, the red meat and wool sector saw exports reach $14.8 billion for the year ending in June, a 20 percent increase from the previous year. At the Red Meat Conference 2026, officials noted that rural confidence has rebounded from a low of minus 66 percent in late 2023 to plus 37 percent. Average sheep and beef farm profits are forecasted to nearly double this season to approximately $287,600 per farm. This recovery is supported by favorable pricing, lower interest costs, and new free trade agreements with India, the UAE, and Gulf states, alongside successful negotiations regarding US beef tariffs and EU deforestation regulations.
