New Zealand bridge construction projects

In July 2026 New Zealand advanced several major bridge works. On 20 July, the Department of Conservation completed concrete foundations for two new suspension bridges: one over the lower Tongariro River at Tūrangi and another 189‑metre span across the Hooker River in Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park. The Tongariro bridge is slated to open in October, while the Hooker Valley bridge opened to the public on 28 July, becoming the country’s longest foot‑bridge of its type and expected to generate substantial tourism revenue.

A week later, on 26 July, a 367‑metre flyover on State Highway 29/Takitimu Drive opened in the Bay of Plenty. The structure forms part of the Takitimu North Link expressway, linking Tauranga and Te Puna, and marks a key milestone in the Road of National Significance programme, with further paving and drainage work planned toward full project completion in 2028.
