New Zealand firearms regulation and oversight
Overview
New Zealand authorities have taken significant steps regarding firearms regulation and oversight. Initially, the New Zealand Police and the Firearms Safety Authority revoked the firearms licence of Destiny Church leader Brian Tamaki following an investigation.
Subsequently, Associate Justice Minister Nicole McKee announced the appointment of the first eight members of the Firearms Licensing Review Committee. Established under the Arms Act 2026, this committee provides independent scrutiny of regulatory decisions, such as license refusals or revocations. Chaired by District Court Judge Robert Spear, the committee offers a mechanism for license holders to challenge decisions independently, intended to restore trust in the regulatory system before proceeding to District Court.
