New Zealand healthcare funding and public support

Public sentiment in New Zealand shows broad support for increased healthcare funding. A survey by University of Otago researchers and the Cancer Society of New Zealand found that approximately two-thirds of the population is willing to pay higher taxes to improve healthcare, particularly for cancer care. The study indicated high support for tobacco and unhealthy food regulations, as well as improved early detection and treatment.

Official projections indicate that New Zealand’s healthcare expenditure is expected to grow at a compound annual rate of 6% between 2025 and 2030. This growth is supported by the 2026 Budget, which increased the Vote Health allocation by 8.4% to $19.19 billion for the 2026-2027 period. Health New Zealand also plans to invest $540.3 million in clinical equipment, technology, and hospital improvements over the coming year, including radiology upgrades and mobile diagnostic units. Long-term demand is anticipated from redevelopments in Whangārei, Tauranga, Hawke's Bay, and Palmerston North.

Political discussions have recently shifted toward preventative care and funding transparency. New Zealand First has proposed a “Make NZ Healthy” plan, advocating for a shift from treating illness to prioritizing prevention, such as embedding nutrition into the national curriculum and researching links between nutrition and mental illness. Additionally, Mental Health Minister Matt Doocey announced that the government has gained “unprecedented clarity” on the allocation of ringfenced mental health and addiction funding following the release of three independent reports from the Mental Health and Addiction Ringfence Taskforce. These reports aim to ensure investments reach high-need areas, including infant, child, youth, and forensic mental health services.
