New Zealand naval transits in the Indo-Pacific
Overview
In September 2026, two New Zealand naval vessels, the frigate Te Mana and the replenishment oiler Aotearoa, transited the Taiwan Strait. New Zealand officials, including Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, described the transit as a “routine activity” conducted in accordance with international law and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
The passage, which was part of a three-month mission in the Indo-Pacific, was monitored by China’s People’s Liberation Army. While China claims sovereignty over the strait, New Zealand, Taiwan, and the United States maintain that it is an international waterway.
