New Zealand regional bridge infrastructure projects
Overview
The New Zealand government has initiated several infrastructure projects to replace or strengthen aging bridges in regional areas.
In late September 2026, a contract was signed for the strengthening of the Ngaruroro River Bridge on State Highway 50 south of Fernhill. The project, estimated to cost between $5 million and $10 million, aims to lift existing speed and weight restrictions that have been in place since October 2022. Construction is expected to begin in October 2026.
Following this, in early October 2026, the government allocated $5 million from the Regional Infrastructure Fund to replace the Piraunui Stream Bridge on State Highway 26 in Waikato. This nearly century-old bridge is slated for replacement to ensure a safer connection for freight and road users, with construction projected to begin in 2027.
