New Zealand Superannuation Fund performance

Overview

The New Zealand Superannuation Fund reached a total value of $94.4 billion for the financial year ending June 2026, representing a 9.7% increase of $9.3 billion from the previous year.

Driven by strong performance in global equity markets, the Fund reported a return on investment of 14.17% after costs. CEO Jo Townsend noted that the Fund’s diversified portfolio—which includes timber, real estate, private market investments, and listed companies—performed exceptionally well. While returns lagged the Reference Portfolio benchmark by 0.1 percentage points, the Fund has historically generated $22 billion in excess value over the last 20 years.

Despite these results, Townsend has warned of a potential correction in the United States stock market. She noted that recent returns on American equities have been nearly double the annualized average of the last 20 years, suggesting a ‘reversion to the mean’ may be necessary. Consequently, the Fund has lowered its long-term expected annual return forecast from 7.8% to 7.2%.

Managed by the Guardians of New Zealand Superannuation, the sovereign wealth fund is intended to cover future superannuation costs. Due to updated population projections and inflation forecasts, withdrawals from the Fund are now expected to begin in 2054.
