Neymar health and injury status at Santos

Neymar’s availability for Santos initially became a concern in late August when he was excused from training due to the flu. While his condition was being monitored by the club’s health department, the situation escalated following a scoreless draw against Palmeiras in the Copa do Brasil.

Neymar has since been diagnosed with a type 2B muscle injury in his right rectus femoris, a partial tear that could sideline him for four to eight weeks. Following the match, Neymar criticized the state of the Vila Belmiro pitch, calling it the “worst pitch the Vila has ever had” due to holes caused by soil decompaction performed just a day before the game. He stated that the uneven surface forced players to exert excessive effort during sprints and stops, contributing to injuries for himself and two teammates.

Other Santos players, including Álvaro Barreal, who suffered a type 2A muscle injury in his left biceps femoris, and defender Lucas Veríssimo, who sustained a right ankle sprain, were also injured during the match. These injuries leave the squad significantly depleted for upcoming fixtures in the Campeonato Brasileiro and the Copa Sul-Americana. The club has commenced pitch maintenance, including cutting and leveling, though reports suggest a full grass replacement may not occur until the end of the season.

Neymar is now expected to miss up to 13 matches, including the Copa Sul-Americana quarterfinals against Atlético-MG. Club president Marcelo Teixeira noted that while Neymar has expressed a desire to help restructure the team, his long-term future remains subject to the club’s upcoming electoral process and financial planning. His current contract is set to expire at the end of 2026, and formal renewal discussions are presently paused.
