During a 29-26 victory over the Buffalo Bills, New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct in the second quarter. The penalty followed a protest regarding a defensive holding call against Marcus Jones. Vrabel admitted to using profanity toward the official, describing the call as “terrible,” while suggesting the referee was “a little sensitive.” Referee Bill Vinovich noted that Vrabel left the box to confront the official, stating that the use of such language made a warning unnecessary. Following the incident, the NFL issued a $250,000 fine to Vrabel for “conduct toward officials.” The league reportedly issued similar fines to Philadelphia Eagles coach Nick Sirianni and New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn. These penalties are being held in abeyance and may be repealed if the coaches maintain good behavior. In response to the reported fine, Vrabel has adopted a more restrained approach toward officiating. Following a 30-24 loss to the Chicago Bears, Vrabel declined to comment on a controversial false-start penalty, stating, “I’m not in good favor with the officiating department so I probably shouldn’t say anything.”
