Research has increasingly highlighted the neurological health risks faced by former NFL players. An initial study in Clinical Medicine indicated that while former athletes may live longer than the average person and face lower risks for cancer or heart disease, they face an unexpectedly high risk of death from neurodegenerative diseases. This follows high-profile diagnoses of conditions such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and vascular dementia among former players. Subsequent findings published in The BMJ provided more specific data regarding Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), stating that at least 24.5 percent of former NFL players who died between 2016 and 2021 had the condition. Researchers from institutions including Mass General Brigham and Boston University analyzed 878 deceased players, finding CTE in 215 of them. Experts warn the actual prevalence may be significantly higher, noting that 643 brains from the study group were never examined post-mortem. If these proportions are applied to the 1,696 players currently under contract, it is estimated that at least 400 active players could develop the condition. Lead researcher Dr. Daniel Daneshvar noted that while the NFL faces scrutiny, many of the cumulative head impacts contributing to CTE occur at the collegiate, high school, and youth levels. Former officials from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) have characterized these rates as “astoundingly high,” “apocalyptically high,” and “unprecedented.” In response, the NFL stated its commitment to player well-being and safety through concussion reduction strategies, while the NFL Players Association described the research as a “sobering reminder” of the long-term risks to players and their families.
