Following the September 3 mass killing in Bình Minh Commune, Dong Nai City Police concluded their investigation into 21-year-old Nguyễn Đức Anh. The police transferred the case file to the People's Procuracy, recommending prosecution for murder and the illegal use of military-grade weapons. Investigators confirmed the motive was a failed romantic relationship with a 17-year-old girl. After being broken up with in July, Đức Anh expressed intentions to kill her during a gathering with friends on September 2. He had previously threatened her in a forest area on August 29. Regarding the associates present during the September 2 drinking session, investigators determined there was no legal basis to prosecute them, as they had attempted to dissuade Đức Anh from his violent intentions. On the morning of September 3, the suspect prepared weapons, including a knife and a Japanese sword, and scouted his former partner's residence. After failing to enter that home, he climbed onto the roof and attempted to break in through a skylight. After being confronted by the girl's father, he moved to an adjacent residence belonging to N. V. Q. Upon entering, he attacked the occupants, killing a 36-year-old woman, H. T. M., and her two children, aged 11 and 1. The husband, 40, sustained 76% bodily injury. On October 6, the People's Court of Dong Nai City held the trial for Nguyễn Đức Anh. The proceedings, presided over by Judge Vo Thi Thanh Phuong, drew large crowds of onlookers. Due to his critical physical and mental state, the surviving husband was unable to attend the trial in person; his brother appeared to represent his interests. At the conclusion of the trial, the Dong Nai People's Court sentenced Nguyễn Đức Anh to death for murder and six years in prison for the illegal use of military weapons. ~~The court characterized his actions as “inhumane and exceptionally serious,” noting that the victims were attacked while sleeping.~~
