Thép Xanh Nam Định striker Nguyễn Xuân Son, previously cleared of a minor ankle issue that had caused uncertainty regarding his participation in the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026, has sustained a new injury. During a match against the Philippines on September 26, the Brazilian-born player suffered a hamstring injury. Following medical assessments in Indonesia, which confirmed a posterior thigh muscle injury, it is estimated that Son will require four to six weeks of recovery. Although the Vietnam Football Federation had arranged for treatment at Vinmec Hospital, Son requested to return to his club, Nam Định FC, to better facilitate his rehabilitation. This request received support from his teammates and the coaching staff. Head coach Kim Sang Sik expressed his distress over the situation, stating, “As head coach, I feel very heartbroken, and for the whole team, this is a very great regret.” Son returned to Hanoi on the morning of September 29. The Vietnam Football Federation will coordinate with Nam Dinh FC to monitor his recovery. The injury is viewed as a significant blow to the national team, given that the 29-year-old striker has maintained a scoring rate of approximately one goal per match, recording 15 goals since December 2024. While midfielder Nguyễn Hai Long acknowledged the loss to the squad's strength, he indicated the team remains mentally prepared to find solutions ahead of their upcoming match against Thailand.
