NHS England HPV self-testing kit rollout
Overview
NHS England has launched a national rollout of free at-home HPV self-testing kits to approximately four million women aged 30 to 65 who have missed routine cervical screening appointments. The initiative seeks to increase participation rates, which are currently at 68.8 per cent, toward a national target of 80 per cent.
The kits allow individuals to collect a vaginal sample via a swab in private and return it to laboratories through pre-paid mail. If high-risk HPV strains are detected, patients must attend follow-up clinical appointments for traditional screenings. National Clinical Director for Women’s Health Dr. Sue Mann described the program as a ‘gamechanger’ to mitigate barriers such as discomfort or time constraints.
Further details indicate the expansion specifically targets screening gaps among groups such as South Asian women, who have reported higher levels of embarrassment regarding clinical examinations. In London, all 1,100 GP practices now offer the self-swab option. This program follows a pilot in London that began in October 2025 and is part of a broader NHS strategy to eliminate cervical cancer by 2040.
