The city of Niš became the site of a cultural dispute regarding the organization of film festivals. One event, organized by filmmakers, was denied access to the symbolic Summer Stage at the Fortress, forcing a relocation to the Nišava quay and Cine Grand cinema. Meanwhile, a government-backed International Film Festival in Niš announced the participation of Belgian actor Jean-Claude Van Damme. Van Damme arrived in Serbia to attend the festival, which was scheduled for August 25 to 30. His visit included a regional premiere of his film, ‘Jardinier’ (The Gardener), and a meeting with Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić in Belgrade. Vučić stated that the actor’s presence would assist in promoting Niš and Serbia internationally. During their meeting, the two discussed film, sports, and global promotion, with Vučić noting on social media that he lost an arm-wrestling match to the actor. On August 26, Van Damme attended the official opening of the International Film Festival at the Niš Fortress Summer Stage, which featured a screening of ‘Čuvar ikone Svetog Đorđa’ (Guardian of the Icon of Saint George). During the ceremony, which included a red carpet procession, Van Damme expressed gratitude to President Vučić and the organizers, noting that while he has attended prestigious events like Cannes, he had never experienced such “organization and welcome.” He also encouraged film professionals to use Serbia for production, citing his positive impression of the country’s production conditions. The festival jury includes actress Snežana Savić, and the event also featured guests such as actor Andrew Howard. Additionally, during his time in Belgrade, Van Damme visited the Ahilej gym to train with Aleksandar ‘Simetrija’ Đorđević. Observers have noted that Van Damme’s presence serves as a symbolic element in a cultural duel, raising questions about institutional support and the right to public space.
