Nicaraguan human rights defender detention

Overview

Human rights organizations are demanding the release of Thelma Montenegro, a Nicaraguan lawyer and member of the Madres de Abril Association. Montenegro was reportedly detained by authorities on August 25 after visiting a police station to renew her driver’s license. Advocates, including the Center for Justice and International Law (CEJIL), have denounced her detention as arbitrary and expressed concerns that she is a victim of forced disappearance.

Montenegro, a critic of the Ortega-Murillo administration, has a history of advocating for justice regarding the deaths of four family members during the 2018 repression. Due to her reported disappearance and the need for daily medication and medical monitoring, human rights collectives have requested urgent protection measures from the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (CIDH).
