Nicaraguan military maritime and border operations

Overview

In early October 2026, the Nicaraguan Army's Naval Force conducted security inspections and protection for merchant, fishing, and transport vessels across maritime, lacustrine, and fluvial ports. These operations facilitated the movement of significant quantities of general merchandise, grains, and fuel, while managing hundreds of national and foreign vessels.

Following these inspections, Nicaragua and Honduras conducted coordinated military operations named Sandino-Morazán and Soberanía between late September and early October 2026. These joint efforts targeted illicit activities in border zones and maritime spaces. The operations resulted in the detention of numerous citizens and the seizure of livestock, firearms, drugs, and vehicles. In the maritime phase, authorities also seized vessels, outboard motors, and seafood.
