Mehmet Aktunç, the National Unity Party (UBP) candidate for the Nicosia Turkish Municipality presidency, has begun outlining his municipal vision through various community engagements. Initially, Aktunç met with youth groups to discuss urban life, stating his goal to transform the city into a “contemporary capital managed with a long-term vision” where young people play a guiding role in decision-making. His campaign subsequently expanded to include professional organizations. Aktunç met with the Cyprus Turkish Chamber of Architects and the Cyprus Turkish Chamber of Civil Engineers to discuss urban planning, infrastructure, and human-centered transformation to improve the quality of life in Lefkoşa. As the election campaign intensifies, Aktunç has further detailed his administrative strategy. In a broadcast on Kıbrıs Genç TV, he emphasized the necessity of a planned urban approach to manage the city’s rising population and current challenges. Leveraging his background as an architect, Aktunç stated that if elected in the December 6 municipal elections, his administration would identify local issues within the first 30 days and present a formal resolution schedule within 100 days. His platform advocates for a shift away from “top-down” management toward greater public participation. To ensure professional governance, Aktunç noted that the UBP has selected experts across various fields to serve as municipal council candidates, aiming to meet modern municipal standards through technical expertise. Expanding on his urban development plan, Aktunç recently stated that the city has lost much of its identity and character, necessitating permanent, planned solutions over temporary fixes. His proposed projects include traffic management, strategic parking to reduce urban load, and the revitalization of the Walled City (Surlariçi). Additionally, he aims to create recreational spaces in areas such as Göçmenköy, Hamitköy, and Haspolat to establish Lefkoşa as a model municipality.
