Nicotine vaping and smoking cessation research

Overview

A Cochrane systematic review of 80 randomized controlled trials involving nearly 30,000 participants has found that nicotine e-cigarettes are more effective for smoking cessation than traditional nicotine replacement therapies, such as patches and gum. The analysis indicates that for every 100 people attempting to quit, approximately eight to ten people successfully stop using nicotine vapes for at least six months, compared to about six people using replacement products. Researchers described the higher success rate of nicotine vapes over nicotine replacement therapy as having a risk ratio of 1.61 with “high certainty”.

While the efficacy of regulated vaping devices is highlighted, health experts have issued warnings regarding safety. Dr. Jamie Hartmann-Boyce noted that unlicensed e-cigarettes present risks including “unstable batteries and harmful chemical compositions”. Public health authorities maintain that while vaping is substantially safer than tobacco smoking, it is not without risk and should be avoided by non-smokers and children.

Additional research from the University of Texas at El Paso suggests potential long-term risks for adolescents. Using animal models, a study published in Psychopharmacology found that nicotine vapor exposure during adolescence can leave lasting imprints on the brain's reward system, leading to increased nicotine-seeking behavior in late adulthood even after long periods of abstinence.
