Niger security and economic policy developments

Niger has initiated several administrative and fiscal measures to address regional security and economic volatility. In early August 2026, the Ministry of Petroleum began drafting a multi-year budget framework and a performance plan for 2027 to improve efficiency within the oil sector. Concurrently, Niger and Burkina Faso pledged closer security coordination through the Alliance of Sahel States to manage trans-border threats.

By late August 2026, the government led by General Abdourahamane Tiani approved a first rectification of the 2026 budget, increasing the total to 2,980.54 billion FCFA (approximately $5.3 billion USD). This 2% increase from the initial projection was driven by the need for additional funding for defense and security forces amid regional challenges, as well as the economic impact of fluctuating international crude oil prices caused by instability in the Middle East.

The revised budget also facilitates a government reshuffle, involving the suppression of certain services previously attached to the Presidency and the Prime Minister’s office, with their missions transferred to other ministries. To support economic recovery, the government intends to simplify the tax system, specifically focusing on the gold mining sector to improve public revenue mobilization.
