During the 9th Africa Agriculture Science Week in Abuja, officials highlighted the need to translate Nigeria's agricultural policy commitments for women and youth into concrete actions. A side event called for stronger financing, clear accountability and measurable indicators to address gaps such as limited land and finance access for rural women and insufficient climate‑responsive measures. At the same forum, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security urged a shift from merely adopting technologies to generating indigenous innovations, outlining reforms that include massive investment in irrigation, mechanisation, digital agriculture, AI, satellite technology, biotechnology and data science.

A few days later, university vice‑chancellors emphasized the role of higher‑education institutions in delivering that agenda. The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta highlighted research on drought‑resistant crops, improved irrigation and soil‑conservation technologies that have boosted yields in pilot farms. The University of Ibadan stressed that digital and software proficiency—such as Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, Power BI and project‑management tools—has become essential for employability in the fourth industrial revolution. Together, the statements illustrate a progression from policy‑level calls for gender‑inclusive, technology‑driven agriculture to concrete academic initiatives focused on investment, innovation and digital skills development to meet Nigeria’s food‑security and economic diversification goals.
