Nigeria anti‑trafficking crackdown intensifies

In late July 2026 Nigeria’s government announced a major overhaul of its anti‑trafficking framework, citing a shift by criminal networks toward social‑media, encrypted messaging and fraudulent recruitment sites. The Attorney‑General called for stricter enforcement of existing anti‑trafficking, cybercrime and money‑laundering laws and for greater cooperation with tech firms and regional partners. NAPTIP reported 839 convictions since its creation, rescued 156 victims and repatriated over 300 Nigerians trafficked from neighboring countries. Within days, authorities moved from policy revisions to active operations. By early August, NAPTIP disclosed that seven suspects were on trial in Gombe State for baby‑trafficking, with two already convicted, and that investigations had uncovered involvement of compromised health‑care and social‑welfare officials. Police also rescued a trafficked woman in Delta State who had been lured to Côte d’Ivoire for forced prostitution, while efforts to locate a second victim continued. The rapid succession of trials, arrests and rescues illustrates Nigeria’s intensified enforcement of its revamped anti‑trafficking strategy. On 6 August, agencies staged a public awareness walk in Kogi State on the World Day Against Human Trafficking, with the Nigerian Immigration Service, Police, NDLEA, FRSC and Vehicle Inspection Office marching from Paparanda Square to the Government House. Senior Special Assistant to the Kogi Governor, Hon. Patience Avosuahi, warned that traffickers lure victims with false promises of work and education. In Lagos the Immigration Service announced the arrest of 12 foreign nationals – a Burkinabe, eight Liberians and three Cameroonians – accused of operating a transnational trafficking and fraudulent recruitment network tied to the QNET/IGNITE scheme. Two victims were rescued and the suspects were transferred to headquarters for further investigation.
