Nigeria automotive industry local production policy

Overview

Nigeria is implementing a ‘Nigeria First’ policy to stimulate domestic automotive production and industrialization. The National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) and the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) are collaborating to ensure Federal Government entities prioritize locally made vehicles. The initiative aims to transition manufacturers from Semi-Knocked-Down (SKD) assembly to Completely-Knocked-Down (CKD) production to meet higher local content requirements and prepare for the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) standards.

Following directives from President Bola Tinubu, the BPP is developing an institutional framework to guide government organizations. Compliance with automotive regulations is being linked to government patronage, with the potential for non-compliant companies to be denied access to government contracts. To further support the sector, the NADDC is organizing the 26th Abuja International Motor Fair in November 2026, focusing on industrialization and the transition toward electric and CNG mobility.
