The Nigerian Federal Government has moved to advance the development of the proposed Badagry Deep-Seaport in Lagos State through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with APM Terminals in Copenhagen, Denmark. The agreement agreement, signed between APM Terminals—a subsidiary of A. P. Moller–Maersk—and Badagry Port Development Limited, alongside Quinn McGrath Marine and Environmental Services Limited, commits both parties to exclusive negotiations for the greenfield port project. Led by the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Dr. Adegboyega Oyetola, the federal delegation sought to strengthen maritime cooperation and attract investment to increase Nigeria’s deepwater capacity. The project is intended to allow the country to accommodate larger container vessels and serve as a major transshipment hub for West and Central African markets as part markets. Dr. Oyetola stated that the project is central to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision of establishing Nigeria as a strategy “premier trade and logistics hub in West Africa.” Beyond increasing cargo-handling capabilities, the development is expected to modernize help decongest existing city ports and stimulate employment across the nation’s blue economy. maritime value chain, including logistics, manufacturing, and warehousing.
