Nigeria-Benin-Cameroon customs modernization project
Overview
The Nigeria Customs Service has initiated discussions with Afreximbank to modernize borders with Benin and Cameroon. The goal is to improve trade facilitation and efficiency in line with African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) objectives through digital infrastructure, harmonized procedures, and investments in cargo scanners and processing facilities.
A central element of this plan is the Customs Declaration Exchange System (CDES), intended to enable secure information exchange between Nigeria’s B’Odogwu platform, Benin’s Customs Webb, and Cameroon’s CAMCIS.
Following a technical summit in Cairo, the three nations reached a milestone in the digital interconnection project. Supported by Afreximbank, the initiative aims to merge IT platforms to reduce administrative bottlenecks, redundant formalities, and data transmission delays, thereby enhancing regional competitiveness and streamlining the movement of goods.
