Nigeria and China are expanding bilateral cooperation across several economic and diplomatic sectors. Initial efforts focused on tourism, with the Nigerian Tourism Development Authority and the China Tourism Academy agreeing to a structured market development programme to better understand Chinese traveler preferences and improve Nigeria’s visibility. Subsequent developments show a broader strengthening of ties, with bilateral trade between the two nations reaching $18 billion in the first half of 2026, representing a 35 per cent increase. Cooperation has expanded into energy, technology, industrialization, artificial intelligence, digital payments, and renewable energy. During a reception in Abuja for China’s 77th National Day, Chinese Ambassador Yu Dunhai reaffirmed a commitment to these sectors and highlighted China’s zero-tariff treatment for 53 African countries to support industrial capacity and the African Continental Free Trade Area. Further efforts to bolster domestic industry include engagements between the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) and over 100 Chinese original equipment manufacturers in Chengdu. These discussions focused on supply-chain integration and technology transfer to strengthen Nigeria’s domestic energy supply chains through partnerships with Chinese oil and gas equipment manufacturers. Cultural and media exchange has also emerged as a priority. The National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) and the China Film Administration are exploring strategic collaborations to facilitate the distribution of Nollywood productions in China and increase the availability of Chinese films in Nigeria. These discussions include theatrical distribution, licensing, and technical expertise exchange. To further drive commercial engagement, the China Commodities Expo Nigeria 2026 is scheduled to take place in Lagos from November 3 to 5, 2026. The event will feature over 250 Chinese manufacturers showcasing products in sectors such as agricultural machinery, solar energy, construction equipment, and automotive products to connect with Nigerian and West African buyers.
