The Nigerian labor market is seeing a shift toward the global digital economy as workers seek remote roles with international employers to earn foreign currency and mitigate domestic economic challenges. This trend involves a choice between remote work and the ‘japa’ phenomenon of physical relocation. The World Bank’s August 2026 Digital Skills Development Blueprint estimates that 28 million Nigerian workers will need digital competencies over the next decade to participate in this sector. In response to these trends, the Nigerian government has launched the ‘Hire from Nigeria’ campaign. Announced by Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris, the initiative aims to transition the nation’s export focus from physical goods to human capital and knowledge-based services. The program seeks to create one million export-linked jobs over five years by leveraging the country’s youthful population and technology sectors to boost foreign exchange inflows. To support this transition, the initiative involves several government bodies, including the Ministries of Education, Industry, Trade and Investment, alongside the National Talent Export Programme (NATEP). The Ministry of Education is currently emphasizing practical, industry-relevant skills, with over 200,000 Nigerians undergoing training across 1,200 centers using an ‘80 per cent practical and 20 per cent theoretical model’. Furthermore, a planned Digital Technology Academy aims to train 35,000 Nigerians in specialized fields such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and cloud computing.
