Nigeria digital vital registration rollout
Overview
Nigeria’s National Population Commission (NPC) has transitioned from a regional rollout of its digital birth and death registration system to a full nationwide implementation.
Initially, the VitalReg platform, part of the Electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (E-CRVS) system, began operations in Akwa Ibom and Kwara states. During this phase, officials reported the establishment of thousands of registration centres to improve demographic data collection.
By July 1, 2026, the VitalReg system became fully operational across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. The initiative seeks to replace fragmented, paper-based methods with an integrated electronic system to address significant registration gaps, specifically targeting birth registration coverage—currently at approximately 57 per cent—and death registration, which remains below 20 per cent. The NPC aims to expand its functional registration centres to approximately 8,000 to improve data integrity and national planning.
