Nigeria economic and banking sector outlook
Overview
Fitch Ratings has revised Nigeria’s long-term issuer default rating outlook from stable to positive, affirming its rating at ‘B’. This shift is driven by ongoing economic reforms, including monetary and exchange rate adjustments that have increased naira flexibility. Consequently, Nigeria’s gross foreign exchange reserves rose to $54.9 billion as of late September 2026, up from $32 billion in April 2024. Fitch expects real GDP growth to reach 4.3% in 2026 and anticipates that inflation will moderate significantly.
Following the sovereign revision, Fitch also changed the credit outlook for 11 Nigerian banking institutions from stable to positive, affirming their ratings at ‘B’. Affected entities include Access Bank Plc, Zenith Bank Plc, First Bank of Nigeria Limited, United Bank for Africa Plc, Guaranty Trust Bank Limited, Fidelity Bank Plc, First City Monument Bank Limited, Wema Bank Plc, First HoldCo Plc, Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc, and Bank of Industry Limited.
The outlook revision for several institutions is supported by the belief that the sovereign credit profile and operating environment may become less restrictive to their standalone creditworthiness. Specifically, First HoldCo Plc and First Bank of Nigeria saw support from their return to compliance with total capital adequacy ratio (CAR) requirements, while the Bank of Industry’s outlook was bolstered by expectations of strengthened government support.
International interest in the market continues to grow. J.P. Morgan intends to establish merchant banking operations in the country by the end of 2026, pending regulatory approval, while South Africa’s Absa Group is evaluating a potential merchant banking licence to expand its presence.
