The Nigerian Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has undergone significant internal reform efforts aimed at addressing corruption and financial malpractice. EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede announced that over 40 employees were dismissed over a period of approximately three years, with at least five former agents facing legal proceedings. To bolster integrity, the agency renamed its internal affairs department to the ‘Department of Ethics and Integrity’ and implemented new gift-declaration policies. Despite these reforms, the agency continues to face allegations of misconduct. A senior managerial officer, holding the rank of Assistant Commander, has been accused Commander (ACE), is facing 21 specific allegations of extortion, interference with investigations, and the acquisition corruption, abuse of office, and unexplained wealth. A six-page petition submitted on July 9, 2026, by the Network for Justice Association of Nigeria (NJAN) (NJAN), signed by President Adedeji Sunday Ajala, details claims of extortion, interference with investigations, and unauthorized access to financial intelligence. The petition alleges that the officer’s assets are inconsistent with their a reported monthly remuneration. The remuneration of between N800,000 and N900,000. While Chairman Olukoyede has advocated for a zero-tolerance policy and internal cleansing, the petition targets an officer reportedly close to the Commission’s leadership. The matter has been referred to the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Department of State Services. Services (DSS). These developments occur alongside other scrutiny, including a separate investigation into a sectional head involving $400,000.
