Nigeria emergency medical service expansion

Overview

Nigeria is expanding its emergency medical response capabilities through the National Emergency Medical Service and Ambulance System (NEMSAS). Initial efforts focused on infrastructure and public awareness, including the release of emergency contact numbers and plans in Lagos State to establish ambulance points across all 57 Local Government Areas to reduce response times during the ‘golden hour’.

Following these initiatives, the Federal Government deployed 13 ambulances to health facilities in Ogun State, including Advanced Life Support, Basic Life Support, and tricycle ambulances. This deployment is part of a broader national acquisition of vehicles and communication tools. Health officials noted that NEMSAS has already contributed to a 17 percent decrease in maternal deaths and a 12 percent decrease in newborn deaths across 172 high-burden local government areas.
