Nigeria is undergoing regulatory and economic shifts within its energy sector. The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has initiated enforcement actions against fuel stations for under-dispensing products, prompting industry associations to mandate meter calibrations to prevent license revocations. Further energy reforms include a planned transition of the domestic gas market to a “willing-buyer, willing-seller” framework by late 2028, moving away from regulated pricing toward a commercially driven system. 2028. While crude oil supply to domestic refineries increased by 17 per cent in August, industry leaders have emphasized the need for continued reform momentum. Ronald Adams, Managing Director of Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company (SNEPCo), has called for increased investment, regulatory certainty, reiterated that Nigeria must accelerate investment and stronger strengthen partnerships between operators, regulators, NNPC Limited, and local communities to maintain global competitiveness remain competitive. Adams noted that prosperity depends on matching vast resources with technology and unlock resource value. sound policy, citing the Bonga deepwater and Bonga North projects as examples of successful infrastructure. Amidst these reforms, the country faces economic pressures including high inflation and fuel price volatility, with petrol prices exceeding N1,400 per litre. To address this, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) introduced a 30-day scheme to sell petrol at cost to prioritize public transport operators. However, critics argue the NNPC’s retail network of approximately 1,000 stations is insufficient to serve a population of over 200 million compared to the country's 31,000 active petrol stations. Concurrently, the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) is working to expand electricity access through renewable energy initiatives like the Energising Education Programme.
