Nigeria food security and agricultural crisis

Nigeria is facing a growing food security crisis characterized by rising costs, supply instability, and declining agricultural productivity.

Agricultural organizations, such as the Tomato and Orchard Producers Association of Nigeria (TOPAN), have called for government intervention through better market management, the creation of agricultural databases, and direct commodity purchasing to stabilize prices. Concurrently, the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has advised maintaining food importation policies to prevent price spikes, noting that domestic insecurity continues to prevent farmers from accessing their land.

As the situation evolves, humanitarian efforts have expanded through the National Community Food Bank Programme to support vulnerable populations. However, experts and United Nations officials warn that emergency relief is insufficient. They emphasize that resolving the crisis requires addressing the underlying insecurity—including banditry and conflict in Northern and North-Central regions—to allow farmers to return to their fields and restore domestic productive capacity.
