Nigeria football events and NFF administrative shifts 2026
In July 2026, Nigerian sports authorities announced two major events. The first briefing detailed the 2026 edition of the 1xCup football tournament in Lagos, featuring 100 clubs from the city’s five divisions, a N20 million prize pool, and scouting presence from clubs across Nigeria, Africa and Europe. Alongside the football competition, the Ikoyi Club 1938 scheduled the 29th Nigeria Golf Cup, a long‑running long-running Independence Celebration tournament, to take place from 19 to 27 September. A week later, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) moved its elective congress from 26 September to 27 September to avoid clashing with the Super Eagles’ opening qualifier for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations against Madagascar on 25 September. The one‑day one-day shift was approved at an extraordinary virtual General Assembly, where President Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau explained that candidates involved with the national team would face travel difficulties on the original date. The congress will still was intended to be held in Lafia, Nasarawa State, and will to elect members to the NFF Executive Committee for the next four years. By mid-August, reports emerged that the National Sports Commission (NSC) had cancelled the NFF electoral congress. This move is reportedly part of a plan to reorganize Nigerian football administration through a proposed three-month normalization committee. The decision follows the Super Falcons’ failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. While speculation regarding the removal of President Ibrahim Musa Gusau persists, FIFA has not yet confirmed plans for a normalization committee, and the plan to appoint a committee chairman has reportedly faced opposition from the Presidency.
