Nigeria FTSE Russell frontier market reclassification
Overview
Nigeria is set to regain its ‘Frontier Market’ status from FTSE Russell, effective September 21, 2026. This reclassification follows the country’s removal from the index in September 2023 due to issues with capital repatriation and foreign exchange liquidity.
The transition to a T+1 settlement cycle caused a brief pause in the upgrade process in June 2026 due to investor concerns regarding prefunding. However, FTSE Russell determined that no material settlement or operational issues existed, allowing the reclassification to proceed.
As part of this move, ten Nigerian companies—including Aradel Holdings, Dangote Cement, First HoldCo, Guaranty Trust Holding Company (GTCO), MTN Nigeria Communications, Nestlé Nigeria, Nigerian Breweries, Presco, Stanbic IBTC Holdings, and Zenith Bank—have been added to the Frontier Index series.
In a strategic move to engage international investors, Dangote Cement Plc has scheduled a Capital Markets Day in London to coincide with the reclassification date. Following this milestone, Nigerian authorities and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) are targeting reinclusion in the MSCI and JPMorgan indices to unlock further foreign capital inflows. The Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX) aims to leverage the new status to achieve deeper liquidity and increased capital for local businesses.
