Nigeria-Ghana beach soccer qualifier referee error
Overview
During the first leg of the 2026 Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations qualifying tie between Nigeria and Ghana in Kaduna, a significant officiating error occurred. Although the match ended in a 3–3 draw during regulation time, Moroccan referee Driss Lamghaidar and his crew mistakenly ordered extra time and a penalty shootout.
Under CAF competition guidelines for two-legged knockout ties, a draw in the first leg should not result in extra time or penalties. Ghana won the erroneous shootout 5–4, causing confusion among officials and players. Following an inquiry by the Nigeria Football Federation, the officiating team admitted to the “administrative blunder.”
The aggregate score remains tied at 3–3, as the erroneous shootout has no impact on the official qualification standings. The second leg is scheduled for October 18 in Keta, Ghana.
