Professor Joash Amupitan, Chairman of Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), was recently scheduled to deliver a keynote address at the 10th Annual Conference of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP) in Lagos. The conference, themed ‘2027 Elections: Trust, Transparency and Shared Responsibilities,’ aims to address electoral credibility as the country approaches the 2027 general elections. Following this, the Obidient Movement raised questions regarding Amupitan’s whereabouts after an INEC social media post identified National Commissioner Prof. Rhoda Gumus as Acting Chairman. Gumus performed these duties while receiving an African Union (AU) Pre-Election and Needs Assessment Mission in Abuja. The movement has requested clarification on whether Amupitan traveled abroad and who authorized his absence, noting a lack of official communication regarding a handover of duties. INEC has since addressed these inquiries, clarifying that Amupitan is on official international assignments. These include participating in the Global Conference on Responsible AI and Elections in Ottawa, Canada, and conducting meetings with Microsoft and the International Foundation for Electoral Systems. Prof. Rhoda Gumus continues to perform duties as Acting Chairman during this period. In parallel, INEC has reported progress on voter inclusivity for the 2027 elections. Following engagements with the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD), the commission stated that 137,487 Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) are currently captured in its voter data. This total includes 30,561 persons with albinism, 19,430 with physical impairments, 13,080 who are visually impaired, and 9,299 who are hearing-impaired.
