Nigeria manufacturing sector economic challenges

Nigeria’s manufacturing and fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) sectors are navigating significant economic and structural challenges. While major FMCG companies recorded combined revenues exceeding N3.5 trillion in the first half of 2026, the broader manufacturing sector’s contribution to the national GDP has declined, falling from 9.43 percent in 2015 to 8.05 percent in 2025.

Operational hurdles have intensified due to rising costs and infrastructure deficits. Manufacturers are facing increased spending on alternative electricity sources, which rose to approximately N1.34tn in 2025 as grid reliability declined. Other significant barriers include high interest rates, petrol subsidy removal impacts, and foreign-exchange volatility.

In response to these pressures, companies are adjusting pricing and packaging to maintain consumer access. Additionally, there is a growing movement toward local technological solutions, such as additive manufacturing, to reduce dependence on imported industrial components and mitigate global supply chain disruptions.
