In late June 2026, Pernod Ricard Nigeria met with NAFDAC to deepen a partnership aimed at protecting product integrity, combating counterfeit spirits and promoting bottle‑recycling and responsible‑drinking initiatives. By late July, NAFDAC shifted from collaboration to enforcement, launching a nationwide operation to seize sachet‑packaged and small PET‑bottle alcohol in line with the federal ban on such products. Teams deployed across all six geopolitical zones targeted markets, motor parks, retail outlets and bars, ordering manufacturers, importers, distributors and retailers to surrender prohibited stock. The crackdown continued into late July. On 22 July, enforcement officers reported seizures of sachet and sub‑200 ml PET bottles and urged the public to report offenders. A week later, raids in Lagos, Ogun and other states uncovered hidden production sites, confiscating 100 ml PET bottles and packaging dated to 23 July. During these raids, officers faced assaults, prompting NAFDAC to warn that attacks on enforcement personnel will be prosecuted. The agency reiterated that violators will face severe sanctions until the market is cleared of banned alcohol. By mid-August 2026, NAFDAC expanded its enforcement efforts by partnering with the Ogun State Police Command to target the sale of sachet and small PET-bottle alcohol. This specific operation, beginning in Abeokuta, aims to seize unregistered or adulterated products to reduce alcohol accessibility for minors. On 24 August 2026, NAFDAC Director-General Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye ordered a nationwide recall of alcoholic beverages in sachets and containers smaller than 200ml, citing the ease with which children can access highly concentrated alcohol. Under an irrevocable enforcement undertaking signed by the Distillers and Blenders Association of Nigeria and the Association of Food, Beverage and Tobacco Employers, manufacturers must withdraw prohibited products from the entire supply chain. Recalled items must be destroyed under NAFDAC supervision at the manufacturer's expense.
