In mid‑June 2026 the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) announced a National Digital Postcode System that will assign a unique, machine‑readable address to every building, mapping diverse geographies from the Sahel‑like north to the tropical south. Within a week the system was extended to all federal ministries, departments, agencies and sub‑national governments, with officials describing it as a strategic national asset for public‑administration reform, financial inclusion and geospatial intelligence. On 11 July the postcode scheme was linked to the National Identification Number (NIN) through a partnership with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC). The First Lady urged citizens to register for a NIN, noting that combined identity and location data will improve planning, service delivery and emergency response. The National Population Commission (NPC) launched the Electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (VitalReg) platform on 1 July 2026, offering 24‑hour online birth and death registration, digital certificates and automatic NIN assignment for newborns. To prepare for a more credible national census, the NPC has digitally demarcated enumeration areas across all 774 local government areas, mapped buildings nationwide, and procured Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) and biometric tools to prevent data manipulation. State‑level roll‑outs began in late July in Sokoto, Ekiti and Kwara, featuring digital printers and training for ward registrars. In Sokoto, the e‑birth registration platform was launched with UNICEF support, while in Kwara, the NPC partnered with the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) to decentralize services. By 4 August, the federal government introduced a self‑service online portal for certificate applications and record corrections. While death registration remains free, online birth attestations incur a ₦5,000 processing fee. Despite these efforts, On 11 August, the NPC reported confirmed that birth registration coverage stands at approximately 40%, 40%. NPC Chairman Dr. Aminu Yusuf noted that with over five million annual births, low registration and unacceptably low death registration remaining significantly low. rates challenge national planning.
