The Nigerian government, through the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), has launched the National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System. This GIS-enabled framework assigns a unique 11-character digital postcode to individual addressable buildings, categorizing locations from the state level down to specific districts and buildings. Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, noted that the initiative seeks to mitigate annual losses estimated between N50 billion and N80 billion caused by failed deliveries. The system is designed to support the e-commerce ecosystem, reduce logistics costs, improve emergency response times, and facilitate the delivery of financial and public services. Replacing the six-digit numeric system introduced in 1986, the new framework utilizes Geographic Information System (GIS) technology to link records to mapped locations, drawing on geographic data collected by the National Population Commission between 2014 and 2022. While the system allows users to search via street names or aliases, early users have reported technical challenges, including certain buildings being missing from the database or neighboring properties appearing to share identical identifiers. Following the Federal Executive Council’s approval of the National Digital Addressing Policy in March 2026, the rollout has raised privacy concerns. Some reports suggest that the registration and verification processes within the application may expose the names of homeowners.
